Iran Executes Man for Alleged Espionage
Iran’s judiciary announced on Monday the execution of Mohammad-Amin Mahdavi Shayesteh, who was convicted of spying for Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad. The execution comes as tensions between Iran and Israel continue to escalate.
Charges Include Collaboration with Foreign Media
Shayesteh was also accused of collaborating with Iran International, a Persian-language TV channel based in London known for its critical coverage of the Iranian government. Tehran considers the broadcaster linked to Israel. The channel was labeled a “terrorist organisation” by Iranian authorities during nationwide protests in 2022, which followed the death of Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish Iranian woman detained for allegedly violating Iran’s strict dress code for women.
Accelerated Security Cases Amid Rising Political Tensions
Iran frequently prosecutes individuals accused of working with foreign intelligence agencies, especially Israel. On Sunday, Iranian officials pledged to fast-track these security-related cases. The judiciary also announced the execution of Majid Mosayebi, another man convicted of spying for Mossad.
Judiciary Statement on Handling Security Cases
“Security cases involving support for the occupying regime of Israel, and acting as the enemy’s fifth column, will be processed with greater urgency,” said judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei on state television.
Iran’s Death Penalty Record
According to human rights organizations such as Amnesty International, Iran is the world’s second-largest user of the death penalty after China, frequently executing individuals accused of espionage and related security offenses.
